Miraculous Oraculos! This is a show that will indulge your senses, magnify your insecurities and lead you to the answers of life. Or will it? That really depends on you, because after all this is your journey, no one else’s.
Oraculos by Teatro de los Sentidos is a feast of sensory delights – you will smell, feel, touch, hear and taste your way through the production and it all begins the moment you enter the box office. The silence is everywhere, expectant guests sit patiently around the room, you join in, you whisper your name to front of house and you hand over your personal belongings for safe keeping. And then you wait and wonder as your apprehension (or excitement as the case may be) builds.
This production, or rather experience is interactive, you won’t sit back and observe, you will play your part and you will do it alone. That’s because Oraculos is akin to life’s journey. There will be the odd helping hand, a guide here or there, other participants shaping your own experience, but essentially you are on your own.
You will contemplate life’s questions and you will go on a quest to find the answers. Your own personality will impact on your experience. Are you anxious, do you take life too seriously; do you go with the flow or laugh at life’s challenges? Whatever the case you will need to place trust in your guides.
Just like in life you ask yourself if you have made the right decisions, question whether you are doing the right thing and wonder how others would react in the same situation. Sometimes you get things wrong and you’ll have to change your approach, but the good thing is, there is no wrong or right answer. It is not so much the final destination but rather the journey that’s important.
The beauty of Oraculos is the mystery – to prepare you for the intricacies of this show would be like telling you the ending to a good book before you’ve had a chance to read it. But I will give you a few hints. Bring minimal belongings, wear comfortable clothing, be prepared to get a little dirty and if you are scared of the dark, unable to crawl or uneasy with small spaces this might not be the show for you. Also wheat grains and flour is used in the production, so if you have respiratory conditions you might want to mention this to the front of house staff.
The performance is advertised as a one-hour show with no interval – but again it’s very much a personal experience. My experience last about one hour and 40 minutes and if it hadn’t been for the social experiment at the end (which lead me to follow the pack) I may well have still been there now.
